The Takashimaya basement was a virtual food mecca and stall owners were extra generous with samples. You could easily stuff yourself without having to spend a dime.

The most unusual thing we tried was the Hainanese Chicken cookies!It was crunchy and spicy and gingery sweet. Strange indeed. Too bad the seller didn’t want to have photos taken of her cookies.
